sibo breath test

What is a SIBO breath test?

Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a common gastrointestinal disorder often presenting chronic gastrointestinal symptoms of maldigestion from bloating, and flatulence to loose stools to abdominal pain. This easy, non-invasive test detects overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. When excessive, the mucosal lining of the intestine is disrupted, leading to malabsorption of nutrients and this can stem into a series of health concerns.

Who might SIBO breath testing be suitable for?

If you experience gas, bloating, diarrhoea, abdominal pain or unexplained abdominal symptoms this may indicate some form of manifested bacterial overgrowth. It can also be potentially the case with maldigestion, a history of constipation, the inability to tolerate sweet/starchy or fibrous, or experience symptoms of hypochlorhydria (which can include the use of acid-blocking drugs). Gastrointestinal distress without a clear picture can occur silently.

What happens if a SIBO test reports positive?

The gastrointestinal symptoms once experienced in patients can be successfully eradicated. Bloating, flatulence, pain and diarrhoea can cease once the bacterial overgrowth has been detected and intervention begins. These intervention strategies can involve changes to diet, digestive support, probiotics and antimicrobial herbs can to treat and restore gut function.

Whilst gastrointestinal symptoms are key in SIBO, the chronic malabsorption occurring in the gut can lead to serious health concerns that do not present in a typical “gut profile”, such as allergies, asthma, fatigue, fertility, weight gain, cold and flu’s and much more. At Darling Health we dig deep to find the underlying cause.
