The calprotectin test is a stool sample test. It is tested by NutriPATH. Depending on your health scenario our Naturopaths may wish to investigate calprotectin as a single marker or in alliance. In alliance refers to a CDSA panel that includes other gastrointestinal markers. It is most often used to detect inflammation in the intestines. Intestinal inflammation can be associated with bacterial infections. It can also be found in patient’s with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
Furthermore this faecal test is useful as a screening tool. It can distinguish between non-inflammatory disorders and IBD, or to monitor disease activity. Additionally, the results will show an increased excretion of faecal calprotectin. Some of the main diseases include Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, infectious colitis and neoplasms (cancer). An elevated calprotectin level essentially indicates an increase in inflammation present in the gastrointestinal tract.
